New York Says It Won't Comply With Order to Dismantle DEI in Schools

New York state officials have formally rejected the Trump administration's order that public schools certify they have ended diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, potentially putting federal education funding on the line.

Daniel Morton-Bentley, counsel and deputy commissioner for the New York State Education Department, told the Department of Education in a letter that the state does not recognize the federal agency's authority to impose such a requirement or to reinterpret civil rights law without proper administrative procedures. "We understand that the current administration seeks to censor anything it deems 'diversity, equity & inclusion,'" he wrote. "But there are no federal or State laws prohibiting the principles of DEI."

The Education Department's directive gave state and local education agencies 10 days to sign a legal certification affirming compliance with federal civil rights laws, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Supreme Court's 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which bars schools from applying race-based criteria to admissions. (More)

Jaguar Land Rover Halts US Shipments in Response to 25 Percent Auto Tariff

British automaker Jaguar Land Rover has announced a temporary pause in vehicle shipments to the United States, citing the need to reassess operations following the Trump administration's newly implemented 25 percent tariff on vehicle imports.

"The USA is an important market for JLR's luxury brands," the company said in an emailed statement to The Epoch Times. "As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid-to-longer term plans."

Jaguar's announcement follows President Donald Trump's sweeping trade measures unveiled last week, which included a 25 percent tariff on all auto imports and parts. In a subsequent April 2 address from the White House, the president declared an economic emergency and introduced a broader 10 percent tariff on nearly all imports, with elevated duties for about 60 countries labeled "worst offenders" in trade imbalances with the United States. China topped that list. (More)
