Good morning! Today we're covering how the tariffs imposed against China aim to rectify decades of imbalance trade hurting American workers, how Americans may be inadvertently funding the CCP, and the first space tourism flight to orbit the earth's poles.

Trump's China Tariffs Strike at Decades of Unfair Practices Hurting US Workers

As part of a major shift in U.S. trade policy, President Donald Trump has ramped up tariffs on Chinese goods, aiming to revive domestic manufacturing and correct decades of imbalanced trade between the two economies.

China's economic growth has accelerated dramatically since the country joined the World Trade Organization in 2001. However, the Chinese Communist Party's trade-distorting practices, such as intellectual property theft, massive state subsidies, currency manipulation, wage suppression, and labor rights violations, have led to the closure of many U.S. manufacturers and the loss of millions of U.S. jobs.

Trump has complained about the problem for decades. Now there is a bipartisan view in Washington on the need to address China's market practices. The president unveiled the contours of his global tariff plans on Wednesday, including a 34 percent reciprocal levy on Beijing. The president noted China's currency manipulation and other non-monetary trade barriers. The action raised the total new tariffs on China to 54 percent, covering approximately $600 billion in annual trade. (More)

Is Your Investment Portfolio Underwriting China's Military Buildup?

Tens of millions of Americans are unwittingly investing in Chinese companies involved in advanced military weapon production, surveillance technologies, and egregious human rights abuses, says former Reagan advisor Roger Robinson.

In the last two and a half decades, approximately 5,000 Chinese companies have entered U.S. capital markets without meaningful screening or oversight, Robinson says. For years, China was uniquely exempted from auditing requirements.

Robinson says roughly 95% of Chinese companies traded on U.S. exchanges are actually shell companies registered in, typically, the Cayman Islands through Variable Interest Entities, a legal structure that means Americans don't actually own real company shares. Additionally, many Americans invest in index funds and exchange-traded funds that include hundreds of Chinese companies, including ones explicitly blacklisted by the U.S. government. "We're funding, in some ways, our own demise," Robinson says, in an interview with our colleague Jan Jekielek on American Thought Leaders. (Watch the full episode.)

Private Space Mission Completes Historic Polar Orbit With Pacific Splashdown

Four space tourists returned to Earth aboard a SpaceX capsule on Friday, concluding their journey as the first private crew to orbit the planet's poles. The crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off Southern California's coast, marking the end of their self-funded expedition that provided unprecedented views of the Earth.

Bitcoin investor Chun Wang, who chartered the SpaceX Dragon capsule for the three-and-a-half day mission, led an international team that included Norwegian filmmaker Jannicke Mikkelsen, German robotics researcher Rabea Rogge, and Australian polar guide Eric Philips.

The group departed from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Monday night and made history as participants in the first human spaceflight to circle the globe above the poles. The mission, dubbed Fram2 after a historic Norwegian polar exploration vessel, also represented the first Pacific splashdown for a space crew in half a century, according to SpaceX. The company indicated the change from Florida landing sites was implemented for safety reasons, ensuring jettisoned components would fall into the ocean. (More)
