Turn Your Bedroom Into a Relaxing Oasis

Now that you have a sleep routine down, you need a place to retire for the evening that continues the relaxation process. Your bedroom should be your sanctuary where you start to relax as soon as you step through the door. We have a few ways to make it cozy, inviting, and most importantly, calming.
Set the Mood | ||||||||||
Painting the room a relaxing color, like blue or white, helps to set the tone immediately. But there's more to making a room feel cozy than color. Think of a spa. You might want room-darkening drapes like the Primrose Velvet Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains. They perform the essential function of keeping out the light, while also looking like a luxurious design element. Add in flameless candles flickering about for hints of soft light (that you don't have to remember to blow out before you doze off). Read our guide for more luxury ideas.
Get Great Sheets and the Right Pillow
Sleeping on a comfortable mattress is important, but so is choosing the right sheets and pillows. You can have the perfect wind-down routine and room set-up, and then get into scratchy sheets and toss and turn all night. We love Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets (use code BETTERREPORT for 30% off), which are soft and cooling. For a more affordable option, consider the California Design Den Cotton Sateen Sheets in crisp white.
The right pillow for you depends on your sleeping position and preference. We have recommendations for every type of sleeper, but our favorites include Purple's Harmony Pillow for back sleepers and the Coop Original Adjustable Pillow for combination sleepers.

Overhead lights can be harsh at any time of day, but when you want to start powering down, mood lighting is essential. We recommend the Passica Decor Battery-Operated Wall Sconces. They're dimmable and come with a remote control so you can stay in bed while adjusting them. And because they're battery-operated, you don't have to wire anything.

Plants are naturally relaxing to look at, so adding greenery to your bedroom makes perfect sense. If you have a green thumb, Peace Lillies are good for adding humidity to and helping circulate cleaner air. Faux plants also work for those of us who struggle to keep real ones alive. Paired with the right vases, like the Parlamain Ceramic Vases, your bedroom will look like a perfectly curated, five-star hotel.

Weighted blankets offer two benefits: calming deep pressure and, if you choose the right ones, a decorative accessory. Cozying up underneath a weighted blanket can help your body relax enough to drift away to sleep. Pair it with a silk sleep mask (my favorite is from Baloo) and you might not move all night. Bearaby and Brooklinen make my two favorites. They're pretty, well-made, and uber relaxing. I particularly recommend Bearaby's kid-size blanket because it's big enough to cover you but not be overwhelming to store on nights you don't want it (and you can save a few bucks too). Luna makes less decorative but more affordable, and just as relaxing, blankets.

Move Work Out of the Bedroom
Many remote workers set up a desk in their bedroom, but if you have the space, you should move your work elsewhere. Though it doesn't seem like it could happen, working in your bedroom can create unhealthy associations. The more you think about work while in your bedroom, the less sleep you'll likely get.
Keep Clutter at Bay | ||||||||||
Clutter can be stressful to look at no matter where in the house it is, but it's especially important to keep your bedroom tidy. Like with work, you don't want to start associating your room with disorder and chaos. Use decorative baskets to hide clutter or clothes and tidy up your vanity with a cosmetic organizer. If you must work from your bedroom, keep your desk in order with a helpful monitor stand with an included organizer tray.
