Senate Confirms Hegseth for Defense Secretary

The Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth as the new secretary of defense in a late-night session on Friday that came down to a tiebreaker from Vice President JD Vance after Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) voted no. The final vote caps off a contentious confirmation process in which Hegseth faced questions about his views on women serving in combat, as well as allegations of alcoholism, sexual assault, and financial mismanagement at two veteran nonprofit organizations.

Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) broke ranks with their fellow Republicans to oppose Hegseth's confirmation, signaling their opposition before the floor vote. McConnell explained his opposition in a statement after the vote.

Trump celebrated Hegseth's confirmation, telling reporters in Los Angeles, "We're very happy about that, we appreciate everyone's vote." When asked for a reaction to McConnell's no vote, Trump replied that he didn't know about the development. "I just heard that we won. Winning is what matters, right?" he said. (More)

Rubio to Visit Panama Amid Rising Tensions Over Canal

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to make his first trip abroad next week, which will include a stop in Panama amid rising tensions over President Donald Trump's vow to take back the Panama Canal.

Rubio noted during his hearing that Chinese companies controlling two of the five port facilities on both ends of the canal have been a concern for a decade. Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings has controlled Balboa on the Pacific side and Cristobal on the Atlantic side of the canal since 1997, with those concessions renewed in 2021 for another 25 years.

During a 2017 trip to Panama, Rubio said he discussed China's influence along the waterway, which is a chokepoint with military value. It's a critical pathway for U.S. warships in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Military and security officials in Panama told Rubio during his visit that Beijing could potentially use its commercial ports during a military conflict. There are "no independent Chinese companies," Rubio said. (More)
