A physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, Kailin Collins, said it best:

"Core strength is intimately related to balance, because you need good stability at your core to have safe and effective movement at the hip, knee, and ankle."

Your core isn't just about six-pack abs.

It's also what supports your back, hips, and glutes—muscles that quietly keep you steady and safe.

When the movements of these muscles are affected by a weak core, even simple tasks like bending or walking can feel shaky.

And when that happens, it can lead to something worse—like a serious fall—and weeks of painful recovery.

Experts at Harvard have studied this problem closely.

What they found could change the way you think about balance and independence.
