WORDS OF WISDOM | "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men." | GEORGE S. PATTON | | Good morning! Today we're covering the spreading of the mystery drone swarms, the settlement of Trump's defamation lawsuit against ABC, and the impeachment of the South Korean president. | TOP NEWS | | ABC News Settles Defamation Lawsuit Brought by Trump ABC News and its anchor George Stephanopoulos have reached a settlement with President-elect Donald Trump in a defamation lawsuit, agreeing to pay a $15 million charitable contribution, $1 million to cover Trump's attorney fees, and issue an apology.
The settlement agreement resolves the legal dispute that began when Trump sued ABC News and Stephanopoulos in the Southern District of Florida, alleging defamation after Stephanopoulos claimed on air that Trump was "found liable for rape" by a federal jury. The text of the deal says it was motivated by the desire to "avoid the further expense, inconvenience and distraction of litigation."
Stephanopoulos and ABC News agreed to publish a statement of regret as an editor's note at the bottom of a March 10, 2024, online article, addressing comments made earlier this year that led Trump to file the lawsuit. The defendants will also pay $15 million to a presidential foundation and museum to be established by Trump, along with $1 million to the president-elect's counsel. (More) | South Korean Lawmakers Vote to Impeach President The South Korean president has been impeached by the opposition-led National Assembly, which voted to suspend him from his official duties over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law earlier this month. President Yoon Suk Yeol's political fate now lies in the hands of the Constitutional Court, which has six months to decide whether to remove him from office.
Last weekend, Yoon's minority party prevented a previous impeachment vote, which requires a two-thirds majority, by boycotting the vote and preventing a quorum. The vote would have needed eight defections out of the 108 seats they hold. On Saturday however, with a shift in political mood over the week, there were enough defections to pass the motion, by a margin of 204–85 in the 300-seat assembly, reported Yonhap.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who was appointed by Yoon, takes over as acting president. The vote suspends Yoon's powers until a decision is made by the Constitutional Court, but in the meantime he remains officially in office.
