Good morning. Today, we're covering a Secret Service report, 3 Supreme Court justices and back-to-back summer meteor showers.

Let's dive in.

Secret Service Director Resigns
Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the U.S. Secret Service, resigned on Tuesday, one day after her testimony before Congress about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas soon after said he was appointing Ronald Rowe, the service's deputy director, to serve as acting director. Ms. Cheatle, who was sworn in as director in 2022, had previously rebuffed bipartisan calls to resign in the wake of the assassination attempt against the former president.

"I take full responsibility for the security lapse," she said in the email to Secret Service staff. "In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director."

Democrats and Republicans took issue with Ms. Cheatle during the hearing on Monday, both for the failures at the Trump rally on July 13 and her sidestepping questions about the basic facts about the shooting which wounded former President Trump, killed one rally attendee, and injured two others.

Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech at her first campaign stop on Tuesday, speaking before a large crowd of supporters in Wisconsin. By the time she took the podium, Ms. Harris had already secured the commitment from more than half the presidential convention delegates, virtually cementing her path to the Democratic nomination.

"We believe in a future where every person has the opportunity not just to get by, but to get ahead. A future where no child has to grow up in poverty, where every worker has the freedom to join a union, where every person has affordable health care, affordable child care, and paid family leave," Ms. Harris said.

By Monday night, the vice president had the support of at least 2,574 delegates—more than the 1,976 majority of delegates she'll need to win on a first ballot. Those delegates, however, still have until the convention to lock in their votes before a candidate rises as the official nominee of the Democratic Party.

Teaching Teens the Power of Discipline
Teaching Teens the Power of Discipline
One of the most valuable gifts my parents gave me wasn't a bike, a dog, a BB gun, or a car. It was a simple morning routine. They made me learn the piano. That meant practice, every weekday, for a set amount of time. Each morning, I descended to the basement where our brown, much-beloved upright piano stood waiting, and practiced. Once per week, I had a lesson with a very accomplished teacher who had high expectations (that I sometimes failed to meet, through my own fault).

Frequently, I did not want to practice. Even more frequently, I did not want to go to my lesson, especially if I'd been lazy during practice. Yet the activity was non-discretionary. I had no choice. I kept at it for six years. I was by no means a brilliant student, but at the end of those six years, I was astonished at how far I'd come and what I'd accomplished by that consistent little habit of daily practice, like a steady drip of water wearing away a rock.

Small Habits Build Big Skills

This question of little daily disciplines is the subject of the book "The Slight Edge" by Jeff Olson. In it, he teaches us not to neglect the mundane, for hidden within our simple, everyday actions are the seeds of tremendous success or catastrophic failure. The elegance of Olson's idea consists in its simplicity. In spite of the common-sense nature of the book's thesis, once you perceive its importance, it has the power to change the way you think about all aspects of your life, and, consequently, their outcomes.
