Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) made the demand in a letter following a heated hearing in which Ms. Cheatle repeatedly sidestepped questions about the basic details of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
"I think that this relationship is irretrievable at this point, and I think that the director has lost the confidence of Congress at a very urgent and tender moment in the history of the country," Mr. Raskin said at the closing of Monday's hearing.
Ms. Cheatle agreed that the security lapses at the rally on July 13 were a "colossal" failure. When pressed for details she deferred to the FBI's ongoing criminal investigation. Ms. Cheatle said she spoke to every agent who was on the ground at the Trump rally and that an internal probe should be completed within 60 days.
