| Friend, This is a slap in the face to women and girls. On April 19th, the Biden administration announced that it was attempting to redefine "sex" to include "gender identity" under Title IX in federal law, effective August 1. That means that starting August 1, men who identify as women must be treated as women under federal law. Alliance Defending Freedom sees this attempted rewrite as a blatant, authoritarian overreach of federal power, and we are taking swift action to challenge the administration's unlawful move before it goes into full effect. Title IX was passed in 1972 to protect equal opportunities for women. You may be familiar with its relation to women's sports, but the harms of the failure to recognize biological sex on a federal level would be far more widespread. In every public school and in almost every private school that accepts government funds, in EVERY state, this redefinition would: - Allow men who identify as women to undress in women's locker rooms
- Create confusion about schools' ability to implement policies to treat students as the opposite sex without their parents' knowledge or consent
- Punish students and teachers who use pronouns inconsistent with a person's self-ascribed gender identity
- Gut equal opportunities for women
- And more
The Biden administration claims that this radical change won't affect women's opportunities. But the government can't redefine "sex" without doing just that. Men and women are created in the image of God—equally valuable, yet wonderfully different. When we deny this simple biological reality and put males in women's sports, female athletes are denied opportunities to compete, victories they've earned, and more. When we reject the truth, we also allow men to violate the safety of women's private spaces, like locker rooms, and expose women and girls to a host of other dangers.
