Report for the Edinburgh Tram Inquiry

This report reviews the Edinburgh tram project's risk management. Projects frequently overrun their cost and timelines and fall short on intended benefits. Cost, schedule, and benefit risk of projects need to be carefully considered to avoid this. The report describes and evaluates risk assessment and management for the Edinburgh tram. The report was produced as part of the Edinburgh Tram Inquiry. Keywords: risk assessment, risk management, infrastructure, megaprojects, optimism bias, strategic misrepresentation, planning fallacy, behavioral science.

Ecofriendly green biosynthesized of metallic nanoparticles: Bio-reduction mechanism, characterization and pharmaceutical applications in biotechnology industry

Abstract Biomolecules of live plants, plant extracts and microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, seaweeds, actinomycetes, algae and microalgae can be used to reduce metal ions to nanoparticles. Biosynthesized nanoparticle effectively controlled oxidative stress, genotoxicity and apoptosis related changes. Green biosynthesized NPs is alternative methods, which is hydrophilic, biocompatible, non-toxic, and used for coating many metal NPs with interesting morphologies and varied sizes. The reducing agents involved include various water-soluble plant metabolites (e.g. alkaloids, phenolic...

Call for Contributions: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON POST-TRUTH (AND) POPULISM

The idea of post-truth has become increasingly important in describing today's political life, particularly (but not exclusively) – as applied to the fields of political communication and political theory. The aim of this volume is threefold: 1) to better understand the varied manifestations of post-truth across regional and national contexts, overcoming the focus on Brexit and Trump; 2) to explore the relationship between post-truth and various manifestations of populism (as well as emerging political leaders, parties and movements in consolidated democracies); 3) to explore the...

teleology aristotle st andrews 2018.pdf

It has become fashionable in contemporary philosophy both within continental and analytic traditions to examine the linkages between the biological and the political. In this paper I wish to examine Monte Ransome Johnson's argument that Aristotle's teleological explanation of the biological is inadequate for the political, or in Monte Ransome Johnson's terms (Aristotle on Teleology) (2005), permits human domination in the cases of patriarchy and slavery.

Development of Online Travel Advisor

Tourism is one of the sources of having a progressive place. The growth of tourism industry in the Philippines is highly increasing, and the positive image of our country as a tourist destination continues to spread further around the world. Tourists usually used the web for searching a place to visit, and they used the information gathered for trip planning. This study aimed to develop an Online Travel Advisor to help the tourist in their trip planning. The Web Development Lifecycle was used in developing the website and a mapping structure was integrated to familiarize the tourist with...

Unionism's obsession with masculinity hurts its cause

Shortly after Arlene Foster became the new leader of the Democratic Unionist Party in 2016, her fellow DUP MLA Edwin Poots caused a media stir by insisting that his leader's most important job has been and will remain that of a wife, a mother, a daughter. While condemnation was justifiably swift, there was little interrogation of why Poots was so anxious to insist on such regressive gender stereotypes. The answer, I suggest, lies as much in the demands of powersharing as it does in unionism's historical construction of leadership as masculine.

Thomas More and the Politics of Conscience

Relying on their intimate knowledge of More's life and writings, and drawing from the best recent scholarship (including their own), Karlin and Oakley provide a lucid account of More's lifelong struggle to practice the "indirect approach" to philosophic statesmanship amidst the turmoil of Tudor politics. Along the way, they offer valuable suggestions about how to apply More's thinking to a changed political, moral, and intellectual landscape.

A Critique of Political Islam: The Turkish Model Case

Political Islam is a term often used in connection with the movements which represent the current political powers in the name of Islam. It is an idea that politically interprets Islamic rules and reflects these rules in a political way. When we look at the phenomenon of political Islam, we can clearly see that it has some differences between Turkey and most of the other Muslim countries. For instance, as Turkey is a secular state, there were some difficulties in expressing religious concepts in politics. Apart from this, political Islam has caused a sharp polarization among conservative...

A new method for planning urban bus transportation paths using GIS

Planning of bus transportation system is one of the most important parts in the planning of public transportation systems. This planning is difficult because of some inconsistent goals. For example, we cannot expect that paths planned for minimum travel time also have maximum coverage and access. In order to attaining the best solution, we must consider many criteria. In this paper, a new GIS-based model is proposed for planning bus transportation system. This model is based on the travel distribution between urban blocks and has some major goals such as maximizing the coverage of travel...

Glass transition improvement in epoxy/graphene composites

Graphene oxide nanoplatelets (GO) were prepared from expanded graphite (EG) and functionalized with triethylenetetramine (GO-TETA). The GO-TETA consisted of a few layers of graphene (*4–6 layers), as determined by atomic force microscopy and Raman spec-troscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the TETA was covalently linked to the GO in the GO-TETA sample. Epoxy composites based on the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with TETA as a hardener and with 0.5–3.0 wt% additions of EG and GO-TETA were investigated. The results showed that the addition of the nanofillers led to an...
