The aim is to provide an insight into how policy objectives are translated into action and to investigate how public transport measures are evaluated. The analysis is based on interviews with civil servants in five Swedish regions. Cost-benefit analysis is sparsely used (if ever) and the results further indicate that planning and evaluation of public transport is to a large extent centred around monitoring on-going trends, e.g. patronage and market share. Such information seems policy-relevant, i.e. is commonly asked for by... | | Structural Dynamics: Forms, chaos, networks, numbers (Meyer Fortes in the 1940s) Meyer Fortes was fascinated by how precarious savannah farmers like the Tallensi of what became Northern Ghana could maintain their social forms when these rested on the chaotic flux of insecure human lives. I restudied the Tallensi (now known by outsiders as Frafra) at home and as migrants to Accra in the mid-1960s. My interest focuses here on the two extraordinary Tallensi monographs (The Dynamics of Clanship, 1945; The Web of Kinship, 1949) based on fieldwork during the late 1930s, and the essay on Time and social structure (Ashanti, 1950), culminating in The Development Cycle in... | | Politics October 2017 Former Presidents of the USA – Call for Action Trump Diet Interpol Admits State of Palestine Lecture: Jon Riley, "Mill's Absolute Ban on Paternalism" Middle East Study Group (MESG) Program 2017 – 2018 Israel Approves New Settler Housing in Hebron for first time in 15 years Fifty Years of Israeli Occupation Thousands of Palestinian and Israeli Women March for Peace Israel joins US in pulling out of Unesco Israeli Company Develops Revolutionary Artificial Cornea Implant Spain's Disintegration 1,516 mass shootings in 1,735 days: America's gun crisis – in one chart Senate Unanimously Passes... | | The Left and Nationalism Scholars of nationalism have long argued about whether nationalism still makes sense in the contemporary world or whether we live in a 'post-ethnic' (Martiniello 2001) or 'post-national' era (Delanty 2006; both cited in Edwards 2009: 177; Hobsbawn 2006). As the late Anthony D. Smith has taught us, these visions did not take into account the way ethnic myths, narratives, beliefs and symbols often predate the modern advent of nationalism and therefore can hardly disappear overnight (Smith 1996; 1998; 1999). In fact, nationalism shows no sign of declining in the near future and its... | | The Quo Vadis of Democratization in Post-Egypt Arab Spring This paper aims at examining how democratization in post-uprising Egypt remains flawed and the reasons for this failure. As a background, democratization in post-Arab Spring Egypt has collapsed and it seems now merely an illusion. The situation worsened since Egypt's democratically elected President Morsi was expelled from office through a coup, following mass protests demanding Morsi's discharge. Egypt's democratization is hard to achieve due to the shadow of the Pharaoh in Egypt, that is, entrenched ruling elites; Egypt's democratization process can never succeed while Egypt's old ruling... | | How do Organizational Culture and Leadership Style Influence Employee Readiness in an Acquired Company? Transformation in an organization can occur due to developments in technology, new rules, social aspects and the environment. The organization transformation process will push the organizational culture that exists to adjust with the occurring changes. One of the forms of transformation in a company is company acquisition which is done to enhance the company's ability to overcome business competitions that keep on developing. Company acquisition will affect the company's readiness in terms of both material resources and human resources that the company owns, which makes it necessary to... | | |
