The Potential Impact of Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication on On-Street Parking under Heterogeneous Conditions

The aim of this paper is to study the impacts of bottom-up information provision about on-street parking places on parking dynamics under heterogeneous conditions. Using an agent-based simulation model, performance is compared between a bottom-up vehicle-to-vehicle communication strategy and a strategy that combines parking sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. In the latter approach on-street parking places are all equipped with sensors capable of disseminating their status. The results show that search time is decreased for informed 'smart' cars, especially under spatially...

Introduction to "Becoming British"

This is the introductory chapter to my 'Becoming British'. Brooks, Thom (2016) 'Becoming British : UK citizenship examined.', London: Biteback Publishing. Abstract From Syrian asylum seekers to super-rich foreign investors, immigration is one of the most controversial issues facing Britain today. Politicians kick the subject from one election to the next with energetic but ineffectual promises to 'crack down', while newspaper editors plaster it across front pages. But few know the truth behind the headlines; indeed, the almost daily changes to our complex immigration laws pile up so...

The Challenge of Maintaining American Security Ties in Post-Authoritarian East Asia [1

The United States faces challenges trying to maintain robust security partnerships with politically liberalizing societies where Washington was perceived complicit in suppression of legitimate indigenous interests. This mixed legacy can inspire electorally empowered publics to raise new complications for continued U.S. presence and influence. Washington must understand and mitigate attendant risks. To explain why and how, we draw on in-depth conversations and interviews with a wide variety of interlocutors in the societies discussed. New domestic dynamics in politically liberalizing...

Serra, Gilles. 2016. "Vote buying with illegal resources: Manifestation of a weak rule of law in Mexico." Journal of Politics in Latin America 8 (1), May: 129–150

Mexico's consolidation strategy seems to be reaching a limit. The country's transition from authoritarianism was largely based on a series of electoral reforms leveling the playing field in elections. While this strategy was initially successful, it has failed to address several problems that are now preventing the country from moving forward, such as clientelism and political corruption. Concretely, this essay analyzes the prevalence of two problems, vote buying and illegal campaign finance, which are closely connected. I draw evidence from available accounts of the 2012 presidential...

Programmable bioelectronics in a stimuli-encoded 3D graphene interface

The ability to program and mimic the dynamic microenvironment of living organisms is a crucial step towards the engineering of advanced bioelectronics. Here, we report for the first time a design for programmable bioelectronics, with 'built-in' switchable and tunable bio-catalytic performance that responds simultaneously to appropriate stimuli. The designed bio-electrodes comprise light and temperature responsive compartments, which allow the building of Boolean logic gates (i.e. "OR" and "AND") based on enzymatic communications to deliver logic operations.
